Most search dog teams work with physical backup. Either another searcher, ranger or law enforcement who takes care of navigation and communication. However, few people are in good enough shape to keep up to a handler running a dog.

People underestimate how much a tracking dog pulls. It's like being attached to a sled dog. Backup personnel do not have this advantage and usually can not keep up.
